Timber Harvesting Plan (THP)

Under the California Forest Practice Rules a landowner must have an approved Timber Harvesting Plan (THP) to market and sell wood to a mill written by a licensed Registered Professional Forester (RPF).  THPs are complex and must include analysis of numerous items such as hydrology and soils/erosion, threatened and endangered species, road building, silvicultural standards, and archaeological surveying.  It is important to have a experienced RPF working for you.

The potential for a timber harvest begins with an appraisal of timber values and forest health.  THPs can result in a financial boon for a timberland owner, but also enable responsible stewardship of land and ecological resources.  The THP mechanism mandates a complete review of all environmental implications of a timber harvest.  Besides timber sales, mutual benefits include improved forest health, improved water quality, fire risk reduction, and improved access to the property among others.  A THP is an investment in one’s property and can have long-term sustainable returns.
